#161: Snowboarding in Kyrgyzstan

The last weekend I went with friends to snowboard/ski in Karakol, the easternmost town in Kyrgyzstan. For most of us it was the opening of the season.

The ski base replaced their old (probably Soviet) T-bar lifts with "new" French chairlifts, thus making our lives much easier. Although chairs were for 3 people, they only allowed two because of difficulties with getting off. This is the view from the lift.
Apparently it used to be somewhere in the French Alps.
Me, Boris, and Beka on the top of the ski base with Karakol Gorge behind us. Stunning and breath-taking view.
Boris preparing to cut through powder snow.

A few people went back country skiing. They made it up to the summit and returned 4 hours later.
I started to experiment with jumping and making tricks. I can barely make a 180.
A small video of Boris and Beka.

Hi,
Came across your blog by chance. Is the Beka in you picture last name Mamyrbaeva? If so she is a dear friend. What are the odds?
I ride a Burton Custom 162, I'd love to return to ride in KG

Wow, this looks not bad at all. I wonder when my ever-lasting "plan" to go skiing will come to fruition. Sorely missing out another season with no progress...

Hi SKJ,
No, it is different Beka.
I have Scott 157.
We have lots of snow this year in Kyrgyzstan.

Emil,
there are many things that I want to learn to do, but I don't. :). Some day.

looks wonderful, i wish we had something like that here in dushanbe. the roads are too bad for us to go skiing, plus, if there is no electricity up there, one is going to freeze at night, especially the children. and karakol is my favorite town on earth!!!! bota
