Report #21: My Alma Mater Going Down?

Today I came across an AUCA announcement in a local newspaper - vacancy announcement for deans of four departments: Economics, Business Administration, Software Programming, and Journalism. FOUR departments have no deans!!! How could this happen? In fact, as an alumnus and a brother of two other AUCA students, I have other questions: how is President Hurwitz dealing with the lack of faculty in other departments, at what stage is the issue with dormitory, where will AUCA be in 5, 10 years?

By the way, I saw another announcement from the Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, which wants to build the second dorm, cafeteria, and a gym. They have over $12 million for it.

So the question is could AUCA lose the competition with Kyrgyz-Russian Slavonic University and Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University in preparing and more importantly in recruiting - the brightest young people of Kyrgyzstan? What AUCA is doing about it?

It is really sad to see our University facing so many challenges. I haven't seen any great success of the new management yet.

It's time the Board of Trustees meet again to discuss the University's strategic development.

On weekends I was looking through The Star (AUCA's student newspaper) and came accross an article from a journalist student pleaing for a dean of the Journalism department. It turns out that they have not had one in more than 6 months. -- Azamat

well, as an outsider - not affiliated to any university in Kyrgyzstan, i consider Manas University and AUCA entirely different! One offers free but quality education, prepares patriots of the country, identifies and nurtures raw but deserving talents from remote and poor areas, and creates a critical mass of highly educated, committed and knowledgeable citizens who work for the development of the country. The other one is an elite institution which selects "the best" who attended elite schools, and offers them quality education, but rather prepares them to leave the country as soon as possible, rather than developing their skills for the local environment.... why quality is going down? you should look deep into the missions of the both universities, and you will understand why!!

plus, i forgot to mention. the second university is affordable to selected few only who mostly study because of their rich parents, and to make matter worse, it prepares arrogant (they think it is confidence actually!) and obnoxious people who are floating over the clouds and considering themselves the best.... while forgetting the old truism that the greater you are, the more modest you should be!
